La Democracia is a community lot from 12 Organic smallholder farmers in north-western Huehuetenango, Guatemala. We have worked with this community for over seven years, and it is firmly established as one of our favourite micro-regions in Guatemala.

Caturra and Bourbon varieties are cultivated on small farms averaging around four hectares each, at approximately 1,700 metres above sea level. Coffee is mechanically de-pulped on-farm, dry fermented for 18–24 hours, then washed and patio dried over three to five days.

Organic practices including on-farm composting, vermiculture and the use of coffee pulp are employed across the farms, with no external inputs purchased to build soil fertility.

Huehuetenango has long been known as an area well suited to coffee cultivation, and for us the La Democracia community continues to produce a particularly sweet, rich and smooth profile, perfectly suited to espresso.

This year’s lot is balanced, with bright notes of mandarin and red apple, smooth honey sweetness and a rich chocolate finish.
