Organic single origin coffee, ready to brew in your mug. Ethiopia Bedaye is aromatic and bright, with notes of blood orange, apricot jam and cocoa, and a clean, lingering finish.

This washed heirloom coffee comes from Bedaye washing station near Agaro in Goma, Jimma. Managed by brothers Khalid Shifa and Ahmed Abateman, the station works with local growers and supports training in organic compost production and sustainable agriculture.

Each box contains six individually wrapped, nitrogen-flushed steep bags, with 13g of roasted ground coffee in each bag. All you need is a mug and hot water.

Place a steep bag in your mug and fill halfway with hot water. Gently move the bag through the water for 10 seconds, then top up your mug. Steep for 3–5 minutes, adjusting to taste. For a stronger brew, leave the bag in while you drink.

Near Agaro in Goma, Jimma, Bedaye washing station is owned and managed by brothers Khalid Shifa and Ahmed Abateman. Building on his work at nearby Echemo farm, Khalid brings the same dedication to organic farming and careful processing to Bedaye. The station works with local growers through an out-grower programme, supporting training in organic compost production and sustainable agriculture.

A third-generation coffee farmer, Khalid manages the 35-hectare Echemo farm in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. Situated at around 2,100 metres above sea level, the farm benefits from conditions that allow coffee cherries to mature slowly. Its history and cultivation practices provide important context for Khalid’s approach at Bedaye.

Historically forested land, Echemo suffered from deforestation before Khalid began replanting native trees among the coffee plants, working towards a complete agroforestry system. The farm is certified organic, with weeds managed manually and no synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides used.

Twelve hectares of Echemo are dedicated to heirloom coffee trees more than 80 years old. Grown from seeds sourced from the nearby Choche forest, these trees have never been pruned or stumped. Their height means pickers often climb the trees to harvest the cherries. Younger plantings have been established using seedlings from these older trees.

Khalid operates Echemo as both a farm and a processing site, with 160 drying beds and a small wet mill. Initially producing natural and honey-processed coffees, he later invested in wet milling equipment to produce washed lots. His washed coffees are known for the expressive character of their heirloom cultivars.

His work extends beyond coffee production. Khalid has funded a four-kilometre section of local road, supports an elementary school and provides agricultural training to neighbouring growers. At Bedaye, this commitment continues through the station’s work with the surrounding farming community, bringing together organic cultivation and careful preparation to produce distinctive washed coffees.
